Revues en lutte motion against the far right

26 June 2024

The SAP Board of Directors and the BMSAP Editorial Committee associate themselves with the motion by Revues en lutte (below), which calls “to mobilise against the far right (…) and to rally around the programme of the Nouveau Front populaire, which carries values of intellectual and scientific freedom in which we firmly believe”. The urgency of the situation in which the thoughtless and dangerous decision of Emmanuel Macron has placed us did not allow us to consult all SAP members on this matter; we therefore specify that we do not speak on behalf of the Society. Nevertheless, we hope that our members will show the discernment and commitment that the situation requires.

Revues en lutte: the social sciences against the far right

Press release — 26 June 2024

The decision of the President of the Republic to dissolve the National Assembly opens up a historic risk of seeing the far right come to power, leading the country to the edge of the abyss. In this dramatic situation, we, social science journals, cannot remain without reacting, nor without speaking out.

The Rassemblement national is not a political formation within the democratic spectrum. In many circumstances, the far right has shown its hostility towards the social sciences, its contempt for the staff who help produce critical knowledge about societies, and its commitment to curtailing academic freedoms. As documented by numerous investigations, when it comes to power, the far right reduces public freedoms and violently attacks the rights of minorities (women, gender and sexual minorities, immigré·es and racialised minorities, people with disabilities, etc.). It also attacks social science research and those who produce it, in order to censor scientific knowledge. The values, objectives and methods defended by and in our journals are incompatible with the practices and with the vision of society carried by the RN. We refuse the prospect of bringing our research to heel, the regimentation of the social sciences and censorship against critical thinking, which would inevitably occur with a Ministry of Higher Education and Research under an RN government. In a knowledge economy that continues to become impoverished, it is our very existence as pluralist journals that is threatened. We join the calls on Higher Education and Research staff to mobilise against the far right and to prevent it from coming to power. We call for rallying around the programme of the Nouveau Front populaire, which carries values of intellectual and scientific freedom in which we firmly believe.
