The Bulletins et Mémoires of the SAP

About the Journal

The oldest scientific publication in biological anthropology in the world.

Founded in 1859, the Bulletins et Mémoires de la Société d’Anthropologie de Paris (BMSAP) is the oldest scientific publication in the world in the field of anthropology. For over 160 years, the BMSAP has fulfilled its mission of disseminating knowledge and promoting research in biological anthropology by covering all areas of the discipline: funerary archaeology, paleopathology, skeletal bioanthropology and methodology, bioanthropology of the living and epidemiology, (paleo)biogeochemistry/proteomics, (paleo)genetics/genomics, forensic anthropology, and paleoanthropology.

A peer-reviewed journal supported by international expertise in submitted articles and endorsed by the CNRS, the BMSAP publishes original articles, review papers, and notes in French or English. It also publishes book reviews, the list of theses defended each year in the discipline, and abstracts from the annual meetings of the Société d’Anthropologie de Paris.

Since 2021, all BMSAP content has been freely accessible on the OpenEdition Journals platform with no publication fees for authors or readers (diamond open access).

Author Guidelines

Would you like to submit an article to the BMSAP? Consult the peer review criteria and our comprehensive guide detailing editorial standards and the submission procedure.

The BMSAP applies the international criteria commonly used for peer review of scientific work.

Manuscripts submitted to the BMSAP must be sent to the editors-in-chief (redacchef@sapweb.fr). After an initial evaluation by the editors-in-chief, manuscripts are forwarded to the editorial board, which participates in selecting the experts for peer review.

Peer review is conducted anonymously by a minimum of two specialists in the discipline addressed in the article. Generally, but not necessarily, at least one of these specialists is a member of the BMSAP editorial committee (see list below).

To be published, each article must receive a positive opinion from the editorial board members, obtain favorable reviews from the reviewers to whom they are submitted, and comply with the presentation standards outlined in the author guidelines.

Latest Issues

Journal Operations and Editorial Team

Operating Structure

The editors-in-chief are responsible for all aspects of journal management.

They are assisted in their work by an Editorial Board composed of the editors-in-chief, the President and Secretary General of the Society, and members of the Board of Directors. Like all positions within the Board, the editors and editorial board members are elected annually within the Board.

The Bulletins et Mémoires de la Société d’Anthropologie de Paris also has an international Editorial Committee comprising 25 anthropologists of different nationalities and fields of expertise within biological anthropology. Sixteen of the 25 members work in foreign institutions and represent 9 countries other than France.
